When Dark Horse acquired the rights to translate and reprint Moebius' work for the North American market, I think we were all expecting that the classic action/adventure/sci-fi material would come first. Dark Horse threw us a curve ball, and decided to lead off with his more philosophical and introspective work-- the stream of consciousness "Inside Moebius'" series and the sci-fi ecological meditation "The World of Edena". It's been strong, inspired work, but probably something of a shock for fans that want to see Arzach fly around on a dinosaur thing."The Art of Edena" is very much a companion to the "World of Edena" collection. There isn't much here but a few short stories and concept art that compliment the Edena series without really adding much to it. That said, I can't say that it's inessential because it's Moebius, one of the few figures in comics that deserves to have every panel scrutinized. If you liked the initial Dark Horse "Edena" volume, you'll probably enjoy this-- it dives a bit into Moebius' thought process as the series evolved. If you haven't read the initial "Edena" volume, you'll need to do so to really grasp what the supplimental material in "Art of Edena" means. (If you--gasp-- didn't like "World of Edena", then you'll have no interest in this volume, and I suspect that you have no soul.)
Way back in 1987, Marvel Comics released Jean Giraud’s “Once Upon a Star†through their Epic imprint and I immediately fell in love with the dreamlike style of Mobius. What I failed to realize was that I didn’t get the complete story because it was released in later volumes of the series which I didn’t get. Last year, I got the completion of the story in “The World of Edenaâ€, released by Dark Horse and discovered that I liked the parts I read, better than the parts I hadn’t. Now, Dark Horse has release “The Art of Edena†as a companion book but there is a lot more here than just Edena related art.There is a whole lot of stuff in this book besides artwork and a story recap of Edena. There is an 8-page story called The Repairman. We also get a 4-page story called “Seeing Naples†which I had already read when Epic reprinted it and loved it from the moment I saw it. Along with “Seeing Naples†we get “Dying to See Naples†which is much longer at 15 pages but for me a lot less impactful. One thing to note is that “Seeing Naples†is unique in that it is the only short story in this book with dialogue. The 24-page “Montrouge Mystery†and the 23-page “Journey†aren’t really stories but are more a series of images with a loose theme. They feature a lot of 2-page spreads and are quite lovely. We also get the 23-page “Planet Once More†as well as 5 pages of stills from a CGI film made based on the short wordless story.I love the art of Jean Giraud but I do prefer when it is accompanied by an actual story. He has a very dream like feel to his art and writing but I find all these dialogue free stories somewhat forgettable. Other people may allow themselves to get lost in the artwork and obviously there are tons of art books that have not even a semblance of a story. I also own Inside Moebius which is the first of five books but I think for now I’m kind of Moebius’d out. There are a lot of other great stories by Giraud that deserve to be reprinted and I’ll probably wait for those rather than get more of the extraneous material.
This is a must have if you're a Moebius fan...I have several of his books and The Art of Edena is a great addition to my collection. Even if you're a Miyazaki fan, you will also enjoy Moebius art. Highly recommend this book and get this before the prices goes up.
Absolutely beautiful reproductions of Moebius' work. You really get a sense of his economy of line, but stunning attention to detail. The color gradiations are a revelation! This is the kind of book you have to have in your hands to truly appreciate.
Thin on substance but Moebius art work makes up for this.
Cannot deny that Moebius is and perhaps still the greatest artist and illustrator of all time.
Anyone who wants to study his work will benefit greatly from this book with a glimpse into how he thinks and works
